I would like to define some terms for the purpose of this journal and for those who are unaware of what they mean.
Doll Base- A doll base is a pixelized person or thing that was created with the intention of others editing it. Doll- A doll is the edited version of a doll base. A doll can be an original, meaning that the artist not only drew the doll but also drew the base, and you will not find the base unless the artist decides to distribute it as a doll base. Dolling/Doller- These terms are used to define the act of creating or editing a doll (dolling) or a person who creates or edits dolls (doller). Original Base- An original base is a doll base that was created by an artist. Traced Base- A traced base is a doll base that was not created by an artist, but rather was traced over an image.
This account and journal are a response to the ever-growing number of 'doll bases' that flood the base category of deviantART. Too many doll bases are simply traces of copyrighted images that the 'artist' did not obtain written permission to use. Thus, it is illegal to redistribute and use unoriginal and unlicensed doll bases on the basis of the copyrights placed on the original image.
HOWEVER it is perfectly legal and acceptable to use original doll bases or doll bases that have written permission of the copyright holder to alter and redistribute.
